Perspective: A row of grinning, polished women assured us that a man accused of serial rape and harassment was a great representative for women.

Which is indeed part of the problem. Sarah Chamberlain, president of Republican Main Street Partnership, toldthat suburban woman "like Trump's policies but join the First Lady in wishing he wouldn't tweet as much".

While other speakers at the convention ignored COVID-19, tried to gloss over Trump's inept management of the pandemic, or spoke about it in the past tense, Melania directly addressed it. "My deepest sympathy goes out to all of you who have lost a loved one and my prayers are with those who are ill or suffering," the First Lady said. "I know many people are anxious and some feel helpless. I want you to know you are not alone.

To underline the point, Trump and his wife stood at a ceremony marking 100 years of the female vote in America, as the President announced he would issue a posthumous pardon for leading suffragist Susan B. Anthony, who had voted in the 1872 presidential election when it was illegal for women to do so . In her trial Anthony announced she would never pay "a dollar of your unjust penalty" and called the charge a "high handed outrage on her rights as a citizen".
