A coroner blasts a Tasmanian hospital over the death of a woman, noting her illness was 'underestimated in the extreme' and that she spent eight hours in an ambulance outside the facility as 'no bed [was] available for her'.

The coroner acknowledged the Tasmanian Health Service had done a comprehensive investigation and once recommendations from that are implemented, the hospital's processes would improve."There were simply too many people requiring medical care from the emergency department at the time of Mrs Pedler's arrival," the coroner said.

"I'm pessimistic about any progress being made on this front given the RCA [root cause analysis] and the response from Clinical Professor Atkinson are silent about what the THS [Tasmanian Health Service] proposes to do about ramping.""People are dying because they don't have the staff, and because they don't have the staff their morale is so low that they make mistakes, they have more sick leave," she said.
