Theresa May and Iain Duncan Smith are poised to spark fresh divisions within the Tory party with calls to exempt human trafficking victims from Rishi Sunak’s small boats legislation
Mr Sunak had faced a growing rebellion from the left of the party due to concerns that the Government’s new laws to crackdown on migrants crossing the Channel would prevent them from claiming asylum.
“All we want to ensure is that safe and legal routes are implemented concurrently with the Government’s bid to stop small boat crossings, not consecutively. The MPs want the Government to begin establishing posts in embassies and consulates in various parts of the world that will allow people to apply for asylum in the UK remotely.
