Here's how you can celebrate the achievements of women around the world on the 8th of March
MirrorpixThere's no denying when it comes to equality, there's still a long way to go for women to become level pegging. But that doesn't mean there's an awful lot to shout about already.. For the uninitiated, it's a global awareness day that celebrates the achievements of women around the world, whether they're political, social, cultural or economic, as well as a day to raise awareness about discrimination.
The event was first recognised by the UN, but the ethos of the event has roots going back much further than that, when oppression and inequality was so stark, women finally pushed back. In 1908, 15,000 brave women marched through New York City, in a bid to improve working hours and pay, and demand voting rights. While the first gathering took place in 1911, the movement has since grown into what it is today. Although women's rights have improved since, with more women in top jobs and boardrooms and better representation of women's voices where it matters, there's still plenty of work to do be done.
Every year, there's always a full calendar of events around the country to celebrate IWD, as well as to be inspired, to learn and to do something. Here we round up what to see, do, listen to and read to inspire you.
