Benji Marshall lost his first game as head coach of the Wests Tigers – but he sure will have some fun with the owner of his old No. 6 jersey, Lachie Galvin.
Benji Marshall remembers his first coach Tim Sheens encouraging him to play what he sees, to trust his instinct – and that was exactly the same message he preached to Wests Tigers debutant playmaker Lachie Galvin. But Marshall will have plenty of fun with 18-year-old Galvin who more than held his own against the men.
As Galvin celebrated his special moment in the sheds beneath GIO Stadium, Marshall told this masthead he could not be prouder of the latest owner of his old No.6 jersey. “He’s always played footy that way. For young halves, it’s sort of a dying art. Players get it drilled into them to play a certain way, to do this play or that play. He just plays what he sees.“If it goes wrong, don’t talk about the mistake … whatever your first instinct is, go with it. If you have to think too much, it’s the wrong thing.Marshall revealed he had told Galvin more than a week in advance he would start in the halves against Canberra.
Galvin said the Raiders pack was respectful and resisted giving it to him, knowing it was his first game.
