Almost seven in 10 Australian workers say the best way for them to develop their skills is to change companies, and three quarters would stay with their employer for longer if it was easier to change jobs internally.

James Nguyen, 25, knew he had to change careers when he felt like he could predict his future.

“When I was thinking about my future, you know, when you look five years into where you want to be, I felt like I knew exactly where I would be,” Mr Nguyen toldThe tech industry seemed like the obvious alternative, given Mr Nguyen had studied free programming courses in his spare time at university. He also believed the tech industry offered more opportunities to learn new skills and try different roles.

Human resources experts said the findings underscored the importance of developing talent, but also spoke to a broader trend of employee disengagement and isolation triggered by the pandemic.A Microsoft executive, Jane Mackarell, said the research showed that Australian workers had higher levels of dissatisfaction with the growth opportunities available at their workplace than the global average.

“It’s about bringing that whole person back to work,” Ms Mackarell said, noting this obligation extended to engaging workers on issues close to their heart.Aaron McEwan, vice president of research and advisory at Gartner, said the most progressive companies on these issues were engaging career coaches to help their staff achieve both their professional and personal goals.
