Amongst the experimental artists capturing this Instagrammable aesthetic is Janina Zais.
Based in Berlin, Germany, Zais is a full-time hair and makeup artist that specializes in graphic hair art. Think of the buzzcut as her canvas, onto which she applies a wide array of imagery, ranging from colorful swirls to a cheeky Instagram verification checkmark. To apply her imagery, Zais paints it by hand using a simple brush and hair dyes . “Not every hairstyle is permanent,” she tells. “I also do it with with body paint.
Zais says hair is the perfect medium to make a statement today—something she thinks has always been done over the years, too. “Hair has changed a lot over time,” she says. “In the ‘70s it was the hippies, in the ’80s the punks, in the ’90s the ravers.
