A former deputy sheriff working as a janitor at the Shamrock Hotel was arrested and charged in a plot to extort his employer, oilman and hotel owner Glenn McCarthy.
Raymond Chambers, 42, was charged by federal authorities of mailing a letter to McCarthy demanding $50,000. The letter threatened to kill or injure McCarthy or his family if the money was not paid, authorities said.
In 1950, Chambers was convicted and sentenced to two years in federal prison, despite McCarthy's wish that he would get probation.
