Electricity smart meters will increasingly be used to make home energy use more efficient.
Electricity smart meters are getting smarter and will soon take over the orchestration of Australian households’ power usage, saving electricity and money.
For instance, 100,000 of the meters Intellihub has installed are used to coordinate the timing of when the hot water heating is turned on and off, to match periods of demand on the power network. The devices will increasingly be deployed to orchestrate other power uses, such as electric vehicle charging or pool filtering, which Ballantine says can account for up to 30 per cent of a home’s energy use.“An energy retailer could reach in and have the pool filter working at certain times of the day or at a certain time, throttle up to the top filtering process or throttle down to a lower speed,” he says.
Williams says that ultimately smart meters will carry out behind-the-scenes optimisation of residential power use without the consumer needing to think about it or even be aware of it.
