"It can be one of the most difficult times for members of our community to deal with because they no longer have those family traditions that they grew up knowing, and they have to figure out what to do instead,” says Blevins. “Having that closeness of a meal with family is something that I think a lot of us take for granted, and having somebody just to call or FaceTime can make a huge difference in somebody's life when they literally have no one.
"They gave me a pillow with pockets for ice packs that I could wrap around myself. They gave me Mederma scar tape. They shared advice about keeping mobility and making sure that the scars don't look so bad," says Blanc.
