A UK horse entered to run in the Melbourne Cup has failed a vet test after being backed from $100 into $26. The horse is still listed in betting markets even though it is banned from competing.

Punters are still being allowed to place bets on a UK import to win the Melbourne Cup even though the horse has already failed an industry vet test and won’t be running in the race.

They claimed four industry vets examined the gelding’s scans and while three of the experts cleared him to run in Melbourne, a fourth ruled him out.Five days after Relentless Voyager failed Racing Victoria’s strict testing regime, the gelding was allocated 51.5 kilograms by Racing Victoria chief handicapper David Hegan for this year’s Melbourne Cup.

Racing Victoria said international horses were subjected to three vet inspections as well as a CT or MRI scan before being cleared to travel to Melbourne. The horse will have to pass a series of new scans before it arrives at the Canterbury quarantine centre. Racing NSW stewards are awaiting results.Since the introduction of new veterinary protocols in 2021, the Melbourne Cup has been run without serious injuries.
