The Human Rights Campaign’s Welcoming Schools program is standing up for LGBTQ+ inclusivity and representation in schools nationwide.

Although their Texas high school has not yet adopted the Welcoming Schools program, Luke has taken the steps to establish a diverse, affirming community as president of their school’s fashion club — an organization that they knew was capable of reaching a wide audience. “I try to make [an environment] where not only queer and trans people, but people of color, people of disability, everybody can feel involved in doing something that is creative and amazing.
For students who attend schools in discriminatory climates, Luke urges the importance of finding an outlet. “A lot of young people feel like the world is crumbling around them because they feel so trapped and secluded by societal norms,” they said. “Find what can help you cope, whether that be through music or writing or therapy, or just screaming at the top of your lungs.”
