._Shiva_R is straddling two worlds — one in which he’s a high school senior balancing college applications and classes, and one in which he’s an elected official serving on the school board that makes decisions that affect his own high school. ⤵️
. We were fighting in the legislature and media and organizing. A lot of the teachers said they felt isolated and alone in this fight against some of the most powerful people in our state. Students are the primary stakeholders in our education and we were being treated as a nuisance and that’s when I knew there was a dynamic that needed changing.: It’s surreal. When we won the election, I was watchingin my basement.
l. Suddenly this sense of isolation was replaced by a sense of power and a sense that when we all work together, we can do something. In a red state like Idaho, as a teenager of color running for office, did you experience racism?: I’m third-generation Idahoan on my mom’s side and my dad is from Nepal. I’m the only person of color on the school board, and my opponent may not be an extremist but he was endorsed by an extremist group and never disavowed it.
I think it also signals [that] representation matters. It matters to have a student in the school board who’s also in the classroom and someone who’s a person of color. I hope my victory signals to teachers and students across the country that we must be unrelenting in our defense of our schools and our community and we can never back down in the face of extremism, violence, and intimidation. That has no place in our schools and we don’t back down to bullies.
