As many as three Australians are feared to be among the five confirmed dead following a devastating volcanic eruption in New Zealand, Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced on Tuesday morning.
Police said they did not expect to find anyone else alive on the island and the operation has moved into the recovery phase.
Mr Morrison said the 13 Australians receiving treatment were in hospitals around New Zealand but some were "unaware" of what had happened because of the nature of their injuries. "This is a terrible tragedy, a time of great innocence and joy interrupted by the horror of that eruption, and I would ask again that we refrain from any speculation about individuals at this time so we can ensure that we can contact and deal directly with families to ease what will be a highly anxious and highly upsetting time for them.
