Whether the referendum vote is No or Yes, the nation’s real work starts on Sunday.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says the current approach has failed and voting No to the Voice means more of the same. Leading Yes campaigner Noel Pearsonthe problems won’t be tackled “without a constant voice in the ear of the government”. But Indigenous voices already inform and design all policymaking. That’s the current approach. Entrenching it in the Constitution won’t make it succeed. Pearson says there’s no Plan B if the referendum fails.

We need a comprehensive performance review of all Indigenous programs and services to identify what outcomes they delivered for the money provided. There’s no disparity for Indigenous people educated at the same level as other Australians. Think about that. Everyone knows the profound impact it would have if every Indigenous child went to school every day. It’s time everyone commits to make it happen.

Moving people from welfare to work is hard. Finding the jobs is easy; what makes it hard is that entrenched welfare dependency is like being stuck in an iron trap. However, there are proven pathways if people are given intensive help and no option to reject it.
