Everything had gone smoothly, and we were filled with anticipation to exit the plane after landing. When I entered the aisle to deboard, however, I realized I could not walk.

Hiking was one of my favorite hobbies before I was diagnosed. There are times when I can still go for a hike, so long as it’s not too intense and I bring my walking stick. There are also days when a hike is impossible for me. I usually don’t know which kind of day it will be until the day arrives. When you are diagnosed with a chronic illness, you have to mourn the loss of the body you once had. You may experience stages of grief such as denial, anger, bargaining, depression and finally acceptance. I have grieved for a body that was reliable. A body that had energy. A body that I could count on to feel good a lot more often than it felt sick.
