Flight cancellations at San Antonio International rise as ice storm sweeps the region

It’s the third day the storm has scrambled flights at San Antonio International. On Tuesday, the airport saw 70 delays and 35 cancellations on Tuesday, and 71 delays and 13 cancellations the day before. Ice accumulation has been a bigger problem in the Hill Country, but San Antonio saw patches of thin ice across the city this morning, with freezing rain reported at Stinson Municipal Airport on the South Side.
The National Weather Service expects periods of freezing rain to continue through Thursday morning. San Antonio is under a winter storm warning. Weather warnings are issued when hazardous weather is occurring, imminent or likely.Deputy Director of Aviation Tom Bartlett said on Tuesday that the airport was prepared to handle icy conditions if needed. Early Wednesday morning, crews were de-icing planes before takeoff at San Antonio International.
The storm is affecting airports across the state. Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport had 52 delays and 1,266 cancellations this morning, and Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport had 61 delays and 48 cancellations, according to FlightAware.A winter storm in December caused flight delays and cancellations across the country, but Southwest Airlines’ inability to keep up during and after the storm — the result of outdated software — wreaked the most havoc for travelers.
