Berserk Burger serves some fun takes on the popular smash burger style and brings an East Coast specialty to the Bay Area.

The new eatery, at 2026 University Ave., in downtown Berkeley, just a few blocks from UC Berkeley, was supposed to open back in September, according to anarticle in August. Now that it's finally open, albeit as takeout-only and with limited lunch hours of 11:30 a.m.-3 p.m. for the time being, college students and residents alike will surely flock to the affordable restaurant.

Along with thin, smashed-on-the-grill burger patties between layers of American cheese, chef-owner Cal Kepner is also highlighting an East Coast bodega staple that's rare to find in the Bay Area: the chopped cheese. Many may compare the chopped cheese to a Philly cheesesteak due to the sandwich roll bread that's used, but it’s more similar to a smash burger than a cheesesteak sandwich.

While it's found at bodegas across the Bronx, Queens and Brooklyn, the chopped cheese is believed to haveby a Spanish Harlem bodega called Hajji’s. Essentially, a frozen burger patty is thrown onto a griddle and diced into tiny pieces by the grill cook and their elongated spatulas, in a rhythmic, chopping motion. Next, two slices of American cheese are placed atop the griddled bits of burger meat to melt, and then everything is slid upon a long, hoagie-style roll.
