An upcoming 2023 Sci-Fi movie is set in a future war between man and machine, and it could finally deliver on the Terminator franchise's promise.
The sci-fi movie The Creator could finally deliver on the Terminator franchise's concept of a future war with machines. Directed by Rogue One: A Star Wars Story's Gareth Edwards, The Creator takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where humans fight for their survival against artificially intelligent machines. Human freedom fighter Joshua is tasked with locating the A.I.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT The scope of The Creator's machine war scenario already looks vast from the movie's trailer, while the premise itself has plenty in common with that of the Terminator movie franchise. That said, The Creator is clearly setting itself up as more than a mere Terminator clone, but their shared premise could be one of its greatest assets.
With the Terminator franchise having hit its peak with Terminator 2: Judgment Day, the three attempts at follow-up Terminator trilogies would all fail to breath new life into the series. Though James Cameron has spoken of another possible Terminator reboot, series star Arnold Schwarzenegger has confirmed he won't be back, leaving the Terminator franchise with a nebulous future at best and its war of man vs. Skynet of ice.
How The Creator Is Adding Something Different To The Terminator Premise The concerns about the rise of A.I. have grown perhaps even more prominent than they were when the Terminator franchise began , and that timeliness is perfect for The Creator to build its story upon. The Creator is also asking its own philosophical questions, and making the machines even more equal players in it. With both Joshua and the young A.I.
The Creator is also putting its own twist on the future war premise with Joshua having some qualms about his mission and electing to protect the cybernetic child he is tasked with eliminating. That, of course, puts both of them at odds with both sides of the war. This is a type of conflict the Terminator series never really utilized, and could give the cyborgs seen in The Creator more autonomy and individuality than the various models of Terminators.
