EXCLUSIVE: Thomas Myhre recalls how he was treated by Neville Southall when replacing the legendary Everton goalkeeper and his relief escaping relegation against Coventry City
Thomas Myhre was handed one of football’s impossible jobs when arriving at Goodison Park as he was tasked with replacing Neville Southall but he remains grateful for the way in which the Everton legend supported him.
“I went over to Everton to spend a week over there training and playing in a reserve match. It went okay so the interest was there but the two clubs still had to strike a deal and I had to wait for almost another month. “He was probably the best goalkeeper in the world in the mid-1980s and when I came in I was just being humble. Obviously he was coming towards the end of his career but I was well aware of the impact he’d had and his history at the club.
“Even then Nev was always really dedicated in training. He was always there really early in the morning and he had quite a drive to get to Liverpool as he was living in Wales. “He was running towards me and instead of me shouting ‘time’, he smashed the ball out of play over the roof of the stand when he didn’t have to. He went absolutely ballistic at me for good reason so from there on I made it my priority to learn the correct phrases to help my team-mates as goalkeepers need to let them know what is going on.”
“I think we started off okay and it looked as though we’d be safe but then we started losing games towards the end of the season and other teams were picking up points. The Coventry City match was just a blur and you can’t let the occasion get to you but knowing what’s at stake it’s almost impossible as a young lad not to let the potential consequences overwhelm you.
