As easy as it would be to look at not going to the SheBelieves Cup with the USWNT as a setback, that’s not how Sam Coffey saw it. She’s turned disappointment into opportunity. itsmeglinehan explains. Supported by Google
, The Athletic follows six players as they work towards a place in the 2023 Women’s World Cup. Follow along as we check in with them each month in the build-up to the tournament, tracking their progress as they prepare both mentally and physically for a chance to shine on the game’s biggest stage.“This month has been a challenge in a lot of ways,” midfielder Sam Coffey began her first answer, trying to sum up February.
“Of course, you have the initial emotion of, ‘I’m upset, I’m frustrated, I’m disappointed,’ all of the things. But then, how to respond to this is ultimately all that matters,” she said. “It’s about the journey, and I’m going to choose to wake up every day and be intentional and absolutely get after it in the best professional environment there is, in my opinion, in the world.”
“Getting the group back together after a really chaotic, messy offseason and seeing everybody’s faces, having difficult but open and honest conversations with each other about what we need and what needs to change, about how we can best move forward, that has been our focus,” she said. “How we can be the best team that we can be in 2023.”
Coffey’s not sure anyone actually knows the right way to navigate through everything the players in Portland have faced over the past couple of years. As organized as the team is on the field, the players have also been working together off the field through deep conversations. “For us to constantly be framed in this negative light that we know is not our doing — and no one is claiming that it’s our doing — it’s just so,” she paused, “I don’t even have the words. It’s infuriating. It’s heartbreaking.”
