Lidia Thorpe has accused the Labor government of 'whitesplaining' in speeches about Indigenous affairs as she once again affirms her support for the Coalition's inquiry into Aboriginal Land Councils.
The Independent Senator for Victoria delivered a fiery speech in the Senate chamber on Wednesday night, demanding the federal government stop using organisations like Aboriginal land councils for financial gains.
“We have corporations that are going in to deals with mining companies, with construction companies, making an absolute fortune which is great, but only the board members benefit or the family of the board members.” “I come from community control, and I live for community control and what is happening in land councils and corporations these days is not community control. It is not. It is so far from it that it makes me sick let alone the thousands of blackfellas who are missing out.
In March this year, Senator Thorpe had voted alongside the Liberal-Nationals for a motion to inquire into Indigenous bodies, which was defeated 30 to 29 by Labor, the Greens and independent senator David Pocock. Senator Price – who has staunchly opposed the constitutionally enshrined Voice – said the inquiry into government funding of organisations like land councils was a far more “practical” measure for Closing the Gap.“This will give us the opportunity to hold these organisations to account and ensure that they’re working effectively and efficiently to improve the lives of our most marginalised.
