If you thought Netflix is killing going to the movies, cinema operators and the film studios that supply them want you to think again
Figures collated by federal screen agency Screen Australia reveal 70 per cent of Australians visit a cinema each year, on average 6.5 times, down from eight visits in 2000.
Limelight Cinemas owner Ross Entwistle, who runs businesses in Brisbane and Canberra, said the"imminent demise" of cinema had been talked about for as long as he had been in the business."The two experiences of watching movies in the home and watching them in a cinema are essentially two different experiences.
"So long as cinema operators continue to invest to ensure the cinema experience is comfortable, unable to be replicated at home and enhance the social aspect of going to the movies, I have nothing but optimism for the future of cinema exhibition."And Christmas through to New Year is still the busiest time at Australian cinemas.
Now streaming services are following their lead. For instance, Stan will launch three major local series or films on Boxing Day, New Year's Day and Australia Day."People will keep going to the movies on Boxing Day as long as the market continues to provide us with a whole slate of movies."Pent-up interest resulted in Star Wars VII: The Force Awakens, directed by Lost co-creator JJ Abrams, grossing $94 million in Australia when it was released the week before Christmas in 2015.
