“So I played soccer, went straight down to the game, and as I got there, one of my mates that was trying to get me to play was coming off with his arm in a sling so I was pretty much straight on.“We were getting absolutely pumped and I still remember there was a guy who caught the ball off a kick-off, ran straight through our team and then on the way to score the try, he picked up the tee we used to kick off and carried it.
His arrival was great news for Penrith but not so great for Sam Elwin, who partnered him in the halves for his debut game but ultimately lost his spot to the wunderkind. “When I first got there in 2016, Nathan, Jarome and Dylan Edwards were all in my pre-season squad for promising players, so they trained with the NSW Cup in that pre-season and were training with men,” said Steve Georgallis, who coached Cleary’s only game in reserve grade.
Just a week after he made his NSW Cup debut, the 18-year-old found out that he was in the team to travel to Melbourne to face a Storm side featuring Cameron Smith, Cooper Cronk and Cameron Munster.“I remember getting told earlier in the week and I didn’t even know how to tell my parents because I was an 18-year-old kid, so I couldn’t believe it was actually happening.“I took lessons out of that game.
“It’s a dying art, but he loves footy. A lot of NRL and NRLW players love the lifestyle, but he loves footy. I have had nothing to do with him, but he just loves the game and you can tell he’s ready for the big moments because he’s grown up watching them. They’ve won three premierships together and are brothers for life, with the sky the limit for two young men who will be split up in 2025 when Luai joins the Tigers.
A missed field goal in the 2018 finals haunted Cleary for a long time. The clutch gene is something few of us are blessed with, and for Cleary, those painful moments made him when they could have easily broken him.
Cleary’s performance against Brisbane is one of the best we’ve ever seen.
