Thousands of Australians with mental health conditions are taking advantage of changes to health insurance rules.

More than 6,000 people have upgraded their cover to have instant access to $73 million worth of mental health treatment in private hospitals.

More than 380,000 people between 18 and 29 also received discounts on their premiums. The Grattan Institute will release a paper on Wednesday calling for an overhaul of the system, allowing for premiums to be adjusted based on members' ages. Image: Getty
