Damaging winds have torn roofs off homes and brought down powerlines as thousands of customers in western Sydney have lost power
.
Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Abrar Shabren said a line of thunderstorms was moving across the Sydney area but was likely to clear by later this evening as a cold front settles in. Sydney Airport recorded wind gusts of 100km/h on Friday afternoon, while Camden recorded 115km/h and Denison recorded 106km/h."We have rain, but not that heavy," he said. "This line of storms, which are moving across, have a lot of down draughts. That is why we are seeing so much wind and horizontal rain," Mr Shabren said.On Friday, Sydney experienced warm and sunny weather during the day, topping 24 degrees in Penrith. By 5pm, temperatures had plummeted to 11.5 degrees.
The fast-moving storm front caused 200 electrical hazards, bringing down trees and branches over powerlines, interrupting power for about 19,500 customers."Crews will continue to work late into tonight to make safe damaged parts of the network and switch around fault sites to restore power to customers where possible," a statement from Endeavour Energy said.
"Affected customers should make suitable arrangements to be without power based on their individual needs and circumstances."Power was also out for 1700 customers in Bondi, Bondi Beach and North Bondi, although the incident was not weather-related and was instead to do with an underground electricity feeder. The power is back on.The most important news, analysis and insights delivered to your inbox at the start and end of each day.
