Thousands of extra services are being added to the city’s public transport network as the government races to maintain strict social distancing measures amid continued growth in patronage

.

While the majority of the system is operating below the 25 per cent capacity that is required for COVID-19 social distancing, some services have been recorded at about 40 per cent.On average the train network is running at about 30 per cent capacity, Transport for NSW Chief Operations Officer Howard Collins said.

Mr Collins said the extra services would be used to increase capacity outside of the traditional peak times.Only 12 people are allowed on a bus under current restrictions and 32 per train carriage, but thePremier Gladys Berejiklian last week hinted the government was considering easing the tight social distancing measures.

“If this crisis continues for many more months the government should assess the viability of facial coverings on public transport as has been adopted in Germany and South Korea,” Mr Minns said.
