Thousands of international students running out of money amid pandemic | AnnaPattySMH
Thousands of international students say they are unable to pay for food or rent after losing their jobs during the coronavirus pandemic, and many fear they will run out of money soon.
Lili Alzate, 29, from Colombia, is on a graduate visa and said she was unemployed for three months after losing three hospitality jobs. She recently found work as a cleaner and her husband is working as a food delivery rider. The survey revealed more than half the respondents believed their financial stress would deepen, with one in three international students forecasting their funds would run out by October.
Phil Honeywood, chief executive officer of the International Education Association, said measures including hardship cash amounts and community kitchen meals and rent relief were no longer meeting students' needs. He said a comprehensive package was needed.
