Where to find new jobs in tech? Increasingly, the answer is far outside Silicon Valley in smaller cities like Virginia Beach, Va., Madison, Wis., and Durham, N.C.
The number of Virginia Beach’s new tech jobs rose by 9% in 2020, after falling 4% in 2019. College towns Durham, N.C., and Madison, Wis., experienced tech job growth of 5% and 6%, respectively.
For decades, the most valuable tech companies invested heavily in both real estate and talent in the Bay Area and a handful of other cities. Between 2015 and 2020, nearly half of the country’s tech job creation was located in San Francisco, San Jose, New York, Seattle, Los Angeles, Boston, Washington, D.C., and Austin.
The slowdown could portend more hiring in other locations. In 2021, the number of tech job postings, which signal more recent economic trends, fell in many of the biggest tech hubs, save for Austin, L.A. and Seattle, where postings have risen rapidly, according to data Brookings analyzed from Emsi Burning Glass, a labor-market analytics company.
