A large pro-Palestine demonstration is underway in Sydney’s Hyde Park with thousands of protesters assembling one week after the bloody Hamas attacks on Israel and the beginning of retaliatory Israeli strikes on Gaza.
Protesters assembled in the park around midday on Sunday, holding signs, waving a sea of Palestinian flags and chanting"Free Palestine".
On Friday, Acting Commissioner David Hudson revealed NSW Police was considering authorising the use of"extraordinary" powers to search and identify protesters ahead of the rally to ensure public safety.Organisers continued with the protest despite failing to receive permission for the demonstration by NSW Police.
The Hamas attacks have killed more than 1,300 Israeli people, including one Australian, and left 3,400 injured. Groups present at Sunday’s peaceful demonstration included the left-wing Socialist Alternative, while NSW Greens MP Jenny Leong urged her followers to come along.
