Tennis: Aussie tennis star Alex de Minaur says he finally has the tools to make it to the quarter final of the Australian Open.

De Minaur ready for tough Aus Open draw | 01:56Alex de Minaur has declared Australian tennis is again a world force and is embracing his prospects as he seeks to end a drought for local men at the Aussie Open that now dates nearly 50 years, with his mates rating him a “huge” chance.

“Every time I come here to the Australian Open, I feel like I’m a better version of what I was the year before. I’ve learnt so much. I’m playing with a lot more confidence. I’m doing all the right things,” de Minaur said. MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA - JANUARY 10: Alex de Minaur of Australia plays a forehand during a practice session ahead of the 2025 Australian Open at Melbourne Park on January 10, 2025 in Melbourne, Australia. The Australian No.1 has been beaten in the Rd of 16 for the past three years in Melbourne by defending champion Jannik Sinner, 10-time winner Novak Djokovic and Russian star Andrey Rublev 12 months ago.

“He had the tricky part in the middle of last year being injured and everything he managed to fight his way through it. To see him play in the United Cup so well, to see that energy that he brings all the time, is incredible. “What did he do? He did three quarters in a row of slams last year, top 10 I think he got to six. He’s just continually getting better. He’s constantly improving. He works so hard. He’s very professional,” Thompson said.

While praising the three seeded Australians for superb seasons in 2024, he expressed admiration for the manner with which de Minaur has handled being the nation’s leading man. “He’s been a ridiculously good role model. I genuinely think he’s a threat at any grand slam and any tournament he plays. He’s made quarterfinals of, I think every slam, but the AO.
