Shadow Foreign Minister Simon Birmingham says threats are “never helpful” as Chinese President Xi Jinping warned US President Joe Biden not to “play with fire” with Taiwan.
He said the types of threats that have been briefed out is something “not conducive” to trying to ensure the “type of peace and prosperity we want to see in the region”.
“The stability and peace, including across the Taiwan straight, is very important,” Mr Birmingham told Sky News Australia. “There ought not be any disruption to the established arrangements there that are providing right now and have provided for economic growth and growth in prosperity in Taiwan.”
