With upgraded lifts, sunrise bubbles and bold plans, Thredbo is raising the bar on alpine experiences in Australia.

The snowcat crunches up the snow-clad slope in the fading light, carrying a noisy human cargo rather than adroitly grooming snow. We are beanied and gloved-up and on our way to an evening of champagne and canapés in a European-style cabin, with a chaser of fireworks fizzing above the ski town in the valley below.

Great skiing is a given at Thredbo, but general manager Stuart Diver says a host of additional activities are planned. You can say comparing Thredbo to North America, to Europe, is a bit out there, but that’s where I want to see us in 10 years’ time.Diver hopes a gravity alpine coaster, like the rides at Aspen Snowmass and Steamboat in Colorado, will be up and running all year round within 18 months, replacing the bobsled track. Along with proposed ziplines, it will add to a suite of action options that already includes fly-fishing, snow shoe and backcountry tours, and Thredbo Leisure Centre’s 50-metre pool.

Designed by architects DKO, Ziegler Thredbo will have 14 two-bedroom apartments called The Terraces, along with five three-bedroom residences on the top level, a spectacular wellness centre – something that Thredbo has been sorely lacking – a private lounge and bar for residents and a restaurant and bar open to the public.

Stuart Diver is happy that others are stepping into the breach to provide high-end properties, saying the large investment in physical infrastructure will help Thredbo “well and truly become one of the premier alpine destinations in the world. You can say comparing Thredbo to North America, to Europe, whatever, is a bit out there, but that’s where I want to see us in 10 years’ time.”Soaking in the enormous spa in the St Moritz Suite after a day skiing is my idea of heaven.

Also proving very popular is the Kareela Hutte Supper Club, a lively affair with canapés and drinks, with the highlight being to watch the flare run skiers and snowboarders go past, streaking down the mountain in a river of red, followed by fireworks lighting up the village.instructor Roland introducing me to areas I have not ventured to before, such as Waimea. The soft, pillowy snow is dreamy, and I feel a great sense of achievement, skiing on long after Roland departs.
