NRL: Trent Barret and Clint Gutherson face the media after avoiding the wooden spoon, but at what cost with some serious injury scares.
During his post-match press conference Barrett revealed Kelma Tuilagi played with a broken hand, while skipper Clint Gutherson played with three broken ribs — which he suffered three weeks ago — and a torn quad.
Gutherson declared there was “no way” he was going to miss ‘Spoonbowl’ and when asked why he said: “The team, the club, ‘Baz’ .” Unfortunately the Eels’ injury list expanded during Friday’s clash at Campbelltown Stadium. Centre Will Penisini picked up a suspected MCL injury, while there’s fears star five-eighth Dylan Brown has suffered an ACL injury.
“To score 60 points when it mattered was good... I’m just really proud of the players, in particular my senior players and captain,” Barrett said. “The last three months have been tough, but the way we stuck together and the last few week’s how we’ve played, we didn’t deserve it and I think we showed that tonight.”There were a couple of special moments sprinkled in the win too. Gutherson scored his 100th NRL try, while Reagan Campbell-Gillard was pushed in front to lead the team out and then kicked the final conversion of the night.
