Thank you for publishing Nicole Jefferson’s commentary about her experience being a two-time kidney transplant recipient. The gift of life not only saves the lives of those who receive donated organs, but saves those who lose a loved one when tragedy strikes. When my big sister, Linda, suffered a tragic drowning accident in 1983 at 17, my parents agreed to donate her heart, kidneys and corneas. All those who received her organs went on to live beautiful lives with their families. In the months and years following our tragic loss, the fact that Linda’s death saved lives through organ donation was a balm on the deep wound of our grief. The decision to donate her organs was a beacon of hope during a very dark time.
