Authorities say the discovery of three dead or injured whales along Western Australia's Midwest coast is a sign of a booming humpback population migrating in both directions.
Researchers say the deaths are not unexpected, and are a sign of a healthy population of humpbacks in the state's coastal waters.
On Friday, a whale calf carcass was found on Ten Mile Beach near Dongara, 350 kilometres north of Perth. "Generally, what we're seeing population of humpback whales that's grown massively in the last couple of decades to probably something in excess of 45,000 animals travelling up and down the coast, going both ways," Mr Desmond said."We wouldn't be surprised to see … a number of whales dying during that time."
