Figures from the Office for National Statistics have highlighted the areas in with the highest prevalence of cigarette smoking in the UK
Three Lancashire areas smoke more cigarettes than any other place in the UK, according to the latest data.
and the local authorities of Burnley and Rossendale have made the top 10 whilst Blackpool ranks 11th. According to the data, 21.2% of people aged 18 and over in Burnley smoke, whilst 20.9% those is Rossendale indulge in the habit. Following closely behind, 20.6% of people in Blackpool currently smoke.Hyndburn also makes the top 20, with 19.5% of residents smoking. The proportion of smokers in the UK has fallen to its lowest level on record, with statisticians saying vaping has played a “major role” in this drop.
New figures from the Office for National Statistics show that 13.3% of people aged 18 and over in the UK smoked cigarettes in 2021, the equivalent of around 6.6 million people. The full list of local authorities has been ranked from highest to lowest, and reads from left to right: name of local authority; estimated proportion of people aged 18 and over who were current smokers in 2021; estimated proportion of people aged 18 and over who were current smokers in 2020.
