Late breaking news tonight
Three men have tonight been charged to court in relation to the attempted murder of a top PSNI detective.
Officers investigating the attempted murder of Detective Chief Inspector John Caldwell in February charged the men, aged 45, 47 and 58, with preparatory acts of terrorism. The 45-year-old man and the 58-year-old man have further been charged with possession of articles for use in terrorism and providing property for the purposes of terrorism.All three are expected to appear before Belfast Magistrates Court tomorrow, Wednesday July 5.There have been 31 arrests to date, this figure includes individuals who have been arrested more than once.
DCI Caldwell was seriously injured after he was shot several times at a sports centre in Omagh, Co Tyrone, in February after coaching a youth sports team.Mr Caldwell spent several weeks in intensive care after the shooting.DCI John Caldwell was presented with the Special Recognition gong at the Sunday Life Spirit of Northern Ireland Awards on Friday night."I am just sorry that these innocent children, including my own son, were subjected to such a harrowing ordeal," Mr Caldwell said.
