Officers discovered the unresponsive individuals near the 3400 block of 19th Street at around 7:52 a.m., Robert Rueca, a public information officer for the San Francisco Police Department, told SFGATE in a statement. Police attempted to provide aid and summoned medics to the scene, but the victims were declared deceased by emergency responders.
Supervisor Hillary Ronen, who represents the neighborhood, said on Twitter she was told by the San Francisco Fire Department that the people had ingested cocaine laced with fentanyl.3 people just died from OD on 19th St in the Mission. The tragedy of this crisis knows no bounds. We must do everything in our power to save people from this deadly epidemic.
Fentanyl was detected in the blood of 89 of the 260 people who died from overdoses in San Francisco in 2018, while it was present in 519 of the 712 people who overdosed in 2020, according to data by the city with SFGATE last September. Deaths caused by the synthetic opioid went up 483% from 2018 to 2020.
