One man received burns to his hands and two others transported to hospital as a precaution, before Hazmat crews decontaminated site

Three people have been taken to hospital and others have been told to monitor for symptoms after a dangerous chemical reaction near the University of Sydney.

Hazmat crews in full-body protective suits were called to decontaminate the scene after the chemical incident on Tuesday near the university’s sports and aquatic centre.A man was taken to hospital after suffering chemical burns to his hands when “acid-based chemicals were being moved for disposal”, Fire and Rescue NSW said in a statement. Two other people were taken to hospital as a precaution.

The scene was decontaminated and the state’s Environment Protection Authority notified. SafeWork NSW was also informed. The University of Sydney said a services building was evacuated but there were no further disruptions. “We’re grateful there do not seem to have been serious injuries as a result, however, ambulance services were on campus and provided appropriate healthcare to the small number we’re aware of who required it,” the university said in a statement.
