Three teenagers have been arrested and cautioned as police continue to search for two others allegedly involved in repeated “buffer riding” on the Sydney Trains network. Five teenagers were first spotted buffer riding — or riding on the backs of trains — across the Harbour Bridge about 5pm on Sunday, January 19, and then again on Monday, January 20, police say. About 9.30pm on Monday a teenage boy was seen on CCTV buffer riding on the rear of a light rail tram on George St.

He fell from the moving tram but was not injured. Three teenagers then ran from the tram into World Square, before police say they spotted them again on George St where two were arrested but one allegedly ran off and was chased by police. All three were later taken to Surry Hills Police Station where two boys aged 14 were given Youth Cautions for buffer riding and possession of housebreaking implements, while a 13-year-old received a warning under the Young Offenders Act.
