Victorians are being urged to see their GPs and make a management plan as the thunderstorm asthma season begins.

Authorities warn this season could be worse than previous springs due to dry winter conditions and forecast rain until December.Victorians are being warned about an increased potential for thunderstorm asthma this spring.

The particles are then pushed back down to the ground by cool downdrafts and if inhaled, can enter a person's lungs and trigger asthma symptoms. "There are certainly some atmospheric reasons and weather-related reasons at the moment why this may well be a little bit of a worse year compared to previous," said the council's director Peter Wark.Professor Wark said people most at risk during a thunderstorm asthma event were those who already suffered from hayfever and asthma, with symptoms including a cough, wheeze and breathlessness.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Bri Macpherson said particular conditions were needed to trigger an event. "These people are particularly susceptible because they have not been exposed to these allergens in their country of origin," Professor Thien said.
