Umbrellas were up again in the Harbour City on Wednesday morning as the first drops of rain came down after a momentary reprieve earlier in the week.

Strengthening coastal trough set to smash Wollongong , Ulladulla south of Sydney with up to 200mm of rain in just 48 hours, bring 'substantial rain' to inland regions too

In a typical year the Harbour city would reach a metre in October, with the city's average annual rain sitting at 1.2m. Severe thunderstorms are a chance for the coast and the Bureau of Meteorology is likely to issue a severe weather warning for this event. Forecast models are predicting rain to increase into Thursday for the central parts of NSW with the risk of heavy falls particularly through the Illawarra and Shoalhaven. Picture: Sky News

The greatest risk with this style of rain event is localised flash flooding - just like the last few NSW rain events.
