For the first time, these activists who survived the Tiananmen Square massacre reveal the kindness shown to them by the police and interrogators who were part of Beijing's crackdown.

Chen Tianshi has kept a secret for the past 32 years.

If he's found to help a Tiananmen escapee, [the government] might even cancel his martyr merit," Ms Wang said, referring to an honour bestowed on those who have died in service in China.Sympathy for the political cause of the student activists within government ranks was not uncommon after 1989, according to Zhou Fengsuo, a prominent Tiananmen student leader who spent a year in Qincheng Prison with Mr Chen.
