Tigers recruit embarrasses Panthers in 54-point State Championship humiliation
New South Wales dominated the men’s and women’s State of Origin series this year, but Queensland has struck back with the Dolphins slaughtering Penrith in a lopsided State Championship encounter.
The Queensland Cup champions put on a clinic at Accor Stadium with seven tries in the first half as they cruised to a record-breaking 68-14 victory. Wests Tigers fans would have been cheering as 2027 recruit Jake Averillo carved up with a first-half double including the opener after just four minutes. It was a procession down the right edge as the Dolphins scored points for fun, with Joven Gyemore putting on the afterburners to scorch away down the sideline.
Averillo’s right boot also caused plenty of problems for the Penrith defence with his banana kick leading to a Kyle Coghill try, before the five-eighth recovered his own chip kick to score just before half-time. Exactly where Jake Averillo plays for the Tigers next season remains a mystery, but he’ll provide raw speed and some attacking flair that coach Benji Marshall will love.
He could easily line up in the halves or somewhere in the outside backs, with Averillo backing up a big Tevita Naufahu break to complete his hat-trick three minutes into the second half while he also added two assists. And the Panthers will never want to hear that number again after Trai Fuller backed up a break to raise the bat with 34 minutes left to play.
In doing do, the Dolphins became the third team in the State Championships to reach 50, with Coghill’s second of the afternoon bringing up the highest score by any team in this fixture. The NSW Cup champions were expected to start Sunday’s smorgasbord of action with a big win, but they were never in the contest.
They were bashed up the middle, exposed on the edges and unable to deal with the Dolphins’ short kicking game in a match that would have been called off in the early rounds if it was a boxing bout. Fullback Jaxen Edgar scored one of their three tries and looks promising, but this looked like a team that didn’t want to be there which will lead to questions over whether we really need this game going forward.
