Overturned call, flurry of balls sinks Tijuana Municipal in sixth inning of elimination game against Curacao
Tijuana Municipal’s thrilling run to — and through — the Little League World Series came to an end Thursday on little more than a technicality.
Curacao plated three runs on three consecutive walks in the top of the sixth and final inning and held off Tijuana’s rally in the bottom half, holding on for a 4-2 win in Williamsport, Pa. Cucacao advances to the international championship game for the second straight season, where it will take on Chinese Taipei.Mexico’s Jorge Rubio hits an RBI single off Curacao’s Juan Cleto Ferreras during the third inning.
Tijuana pitcher Jonathan Juarez intentionally walked Curacao star Jay-Dlynn Wiel with a runner on second base, putting him over the Little League pitch limit. Jamil Mandujano replaced the lefty on the mound, and got Nassir El-Ossais to hit into what appeared to be a forceout at second. But Wiel avoided a tag at second base, forcing Tijuana’s second baseman to throw to first base. El-Ossais was called out at first base only for umpires to reverse the call after looking at a video replay.
Trailing by three runs in their final at-bat, Tijuana rallied. Jorge LIzarraga drove in a run with a groundout to second base, making it 4-2. Juarez came to the plate with runners on second and third and two out. The left worked a 3-1 count before swinging and Shemar Jacobus’ fastball, making it full. He then took a pitch on the inside corner for strike three.
