With an election on the horizon, Anthony Albanese and Scott Morrison are almost head to head in the opinion polls. But Albanese has something up his expertly tailored sleeve – and that’s his social media team.
Albanese, on the other hand, has taken a risk and embraced Australia’s third most-downloaded app, trumped only by Service NSW and Service Victoria. When Morrison took a swipe at his slimmed-down appearance, Albanese hit back. Or rather, clapped back. Mere hours after the PM’s salty press conference, the Labor Party TikTok grabbed a part of his address – the “you know, I’m not pretending to be someone else” bit – and made a supercut of the PM cutting hair, sitting in a forklift and welding metal without a mask, underscored by thetheme song. It was a use of the app so deft it could be taught in a university media course.
Here, the absurdity of the videos would be lost on anyone who isn’t on TikTok. One of their most popular uploads is a slideshow of Albanese’s “glow up” to an R-rated trending sound about doing fellatio on the CEO of Microsoft. The caption references Albanese not by his marketing-made moniker “Albo”, but rather by “”. It’s a nod to “bussy” – that’s internet slang for bottom – and while nonsensical, it’s the highest term of endearment a grown man can hope for online.
