The ‘Till’ director called out the industry’s “unabashed misogyny towards Black women,” as well the lack of a nomination for the film’s star Danielle Deadwyler.
Even when looking beyond the acting nominations, Daniels makes a strong point. Not only were Deadwyler and Davis ignored by the Academy, but the Black female directors of their films, Chukwu andalso went unrecognized in nominations, and both films received a grand total of zero nominations. Despite the so-called racial reckoning of #OscarsSoWhite in 2015 when the Academy failed to nominate a single actor of color, there’s still a lot of work to be done.
Still, Chukwu ended her Instagram caption on a note of positivity. “I am forever in gratitude for the greatest lesson of my life,” she wrote. “Regardless of any challenges or obstacles, I will always have the power to cultivate my own joy, and it is this joy that will continue to be one of my greatest forms of resistance.”
