Cahill has quietly ascended to the key role of technical director in Qatar, effectively putting him in control of the development systems of one of Australia’s direct competitors.
When the Socceroos went to Qatar for the 2022 World Cup, their point man was Tim Cahill. Officially he was the team’s head of delegation, but secretly he was one of their biggest assets: it was through Cahill’s local connections that they were granted access to the Aspire Academy, the $1.
He is also a ‘special advisor’ to the QFA’s president, Jassim Rashid Al Buenain, and sits on the board of KAS Eupen, the Belgian club owned by Qatar. When Qatar won the Asian Cup final in February – their second continental crown in a row, and the same trophyin 2015 – Cahill was there in the background celebrating. He even deputised as an assistant coach when former national team boss Carlos Quieroz was handed a touchline ban during the CONCACAF Gold Cup last year, to which Qatar was invited.
While its supremacy is now being challenged by Saudi Arabia, Qatar’s status as a footballing destination has become totally entrenched. Just last month, FIFA controversially announced that the men’s under-17 World Cup would be staged annually, expanded to 48 teams, and that the next five editions would all be held there, without so much as a public process.
“Now, I have that same mindset in the boardroom, because football never sleeps. And to have that academic side of coming and being the chief sports officer of Aspire Academy is a blessing.
