‘Timber cathedrals’: New Sydney arts precinct wins major award | LindaMorrissmh
“Timber cathedrals.” That’s how architect Peter Tonkin describes Walsh Bay’s 100-year-old heritage-listed wharves Pier 2/3 and Wharf 4/5 that his firm has transformed into a new arts precinct already humming with dance, theatre and music.
Tonkin’s team turned 1800 square metres of space into a new arts ecosystem that could accommodate 1800 patrons at once. The precinct is now home to nine arts companies, including the Australian Chamber Orchestra, Bangarra Dance Theatre, Bell Shakespeare and the Sydney Theatre Company. It has five new theatres, concert halls, vast exhibition spaces, rehearsal rooms, bars, administration, and workshops for wardrobe, scenery and props.
Unlike Wharf 4/5, the interior of Pier 2/3 was intact. Designed for massive amounts of cargo to be stacked, the original iron bark floors – from old trees in northern NSW – had been laid on the diagonal to stiffen the structure. They’d been buried under three inches of asphalt that was removed. To create soundproof performance and rehearsal spaces for the resident arts companies, boxes were built inside the wharves to ensure the tapestry of the timber was on show. New walls were clad in mirrors to make them disappear.
